The Gobi Desert Always Has Another Story to Tell
There is something about the Gobi Desert that keeps calling us back. No matter how many times we visit, it always has a new story to tell, a different landscape to reveal, or an unexpected moment waiting around the next corner. Perhaps that is why the Gobi never loses its magic.
At Premium Travel Mongolia, we make an inspection trip every year before the travel season begins. It's our opportunity to revisit the places we recommend, inspect our partner ger camps, experience new activities, and ensure every journey we create for our guests is as memorable as possible. Our first inspection trip of the 2026 season took us back to the legendary Gobi Desert in late May.
Returning to the Gobi
An early Friday morning flight brought us to Dalanzadgad in just over an hour. Our trusted local driver was already waiting, ready to begin another adventure together.
Before heading into the wilderness, we stopped at one of the city's best local hotels for breakfast and to inspect the property. Then, leaving the city behind, we drove towards Yol Valley, where towering cliffs, crisp mountain air, and crystal-clear streams, still edged with patches of ice, welcomed us once again.
Even though we've walked through Yol Valley many times before, every visit feels different. This time, the valley was peaceful and wonderfully quiet. Travelling in late May meant there were still relatively few visitors, allowing us to enjoy the landscape in near silence.
One of our favourite moments came when a curious fox cautiously approached us. It had clearly encountered visitors before, carefully gathering every piece of fruit we offered before disappearing back into the valley. Nearby, a small lark calmly drank from the stream just a few metres away before flying off as if we weren't there at all. It reminded us that although these animals have grown accustomed to people, they remain beautifully wild.
Continuing beyond Yol Valley, we drove through the spectacular Dungenee Canyon. Hidden among the dramatic cliffs, a lone Siberian apricot tree (Prunus sibirica, formerly Armeniaca sibirica) was in bloom, adding a splash of delicate colour to the rugged landscape. Then came another unforgettable surprise: a magnificent Lammergeier sat quietly on its nest, completely undisturbed by our presence. Watching such a rare bird in its natural habitat felt like an incredible privilege.
As we continued towards the Khongor Sand Dunes, much of the journey was now on newly paved roads, making the drive smoother than ever. The vast Gobi stretched endlessly around us. Then, just before sunset, something caught our eye. A herd of graceful goitered gazelles raced across the open steppe, disappearing into the golden light almost as quickly as they appeared. The moment lasted only seconds, but those fleeting encounters are often the ones we remember most.
And then came Khongor.
No photograph truly prepares you for your first glimpse of the Singing Dunes. Rising behind the mountains, the enormous dunes glowed in shades of gold beneath the evening sun. We simply stopped the vehicle and admired the view in silence.
Sometimes nature doesn't need words.
When the Sand Began to Sing
The following morning brought one of the most unexpected moments of the trip. Standing before the magnificent Singing Dunes, we suddenly heard a deep humming sound carried by the strong spring wind.
At first, we looked at each other, wondering where the mysterious sound was coming from.
Then we realised.
It was the sand itself.
As millions of tiny grains moved together across the dunes, they created the deep, almost musical vibration that gave the dunes their famous name.
Even our local Gobi driver, who has spent many years guiding travellers through this landscape, smiled and admitted that he had never actually heard the dunes sing before.
We couldn't stop smiling.
Moments like these remind us why we continue exploring our own country year after year.
A Quiet Moment at Khavtsgait
One of the highlights of our inspection was hiking to the ancient Khavtsgait Petroglyphs. The trail requires careful footing, especially on the descent, but reaching the summit is worth every step.
Standing alone on the rocky ridge, all we could hear was the wind. And when even the wind fell silent, the stillness was absolute. Far below, scattered herds of sheep looked like tiny pearls sprinkled across the endless steppe.
For a few precious minutes, time itself seemed to pause.
Those peaceful moments are often the ones that stay with us long after the journey ends.
Sunset at Bayanzag
Later that day, we continued towards Bayanzag, the world-famous Flaming Cliffs. There is a reason photographers fall in love with this place.
As the sun slowly disappeared below the horizon, the red sandstone cliffs transformed into brilliant shades of orange and crimson. It was easy to imagine the excitement of the first dinosaur fossil discoveries made here nearly a century ago.
Even after countless visits, Bayanzag never disappoints.
I still can't help secretly hoping to discover a dinosaur fossil myself. One of our travellers was incredibly fortunate to stumble upon part of a dinosaur egg nest after heavy flooding exposed it in the summer of 2025. The discovery was later carefully documented and collected by local palaeontologists, a reminder that the Gobi still holds countless secrets beneath its surface.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
Inspection trips aren't only about beautiful landscapes. They're also about making sure our travellers receive the very best experience. This year, we were delighted to see many improvements across the ger camps we work with.
Many camps have installed fans in every ger, making summer stays far more comfortable. Around Bayanzag, several camps have invested in modern laundry, sterilisation, and ironing facilities, while many of our partner camps have further upgraded their en-suite accommodation to an even higher standard.
These may seem like small details, but after a long day exploring the Gobi, they make all the difference.
Every Journey Teaches Us Something New
This trip reminded us that even places we know well continue to surprise us. Travelling in late May offers excellent wildlife viewing thanks to the smaller number of visitors, although travellers should also be prepared for strong spring winds.
Local families also shared another valuable tip with us: while summer is the most popular season, September is arguably one of the best times to visit the Gobi. The weather is calmer, temperatures are pleasantly mild, and the landscape takes on richer colours, revealing yet another side of the desert's personality.
Before our Sunday evening flight back to Ulaanbaatar, we even discovered two new experiences in Dalanzadgad that fit perfectly into the final hours of a Gobi itinerary - hidden gems we're excited to share with our future guests.
